Course Information

CIEP classes are taught as integrated skills and offer a 5-level program. Each class meets for 3 hours a day. Furthermore, students have a 1-hour lab to practice and continue their studies each day. Students may meet with native speakers, listen to guest lecturers, complete homework, or engage in other activities during this time. CIEP follows an integrated approach to language learning so students can learn how to combine receptive skills (listening and reading) and productive skills (speaking and writing) across the curriculum.

CIEP I: High-Beginner English

In this class, students will:

Develop competence in reading short, simplified, and highly modified texts.
Comprehend basic elements of a talk.
Develop basic listening skills with correct pronunciation.
Enhance writing skills on a sentence level.
Progress from writing and organizing unified sentences to simple paragraphs in different rhetorical styles.

To accomplish these goals, students will:

Interact with short reading passages and lectures using various strategies involving basic critical thinking and metacognitive skills.
Develop basic listening skills and engage in simple everyday conversations.
Work on basic pronunciation, intonation, and word stress patterns.
Participate in small group or academic discussions and deliver short presentations.
Develop writing skills at the sentence level by producing simple sentences with newly learned vocabulary and grammar, maintaining appropriate spelling, and following basic mechanics/formatting rules.
Practice the process approach to writing paragraphs, ensuring proper mechanics and formatting centered around a topic sentence with a controlling idea.
Enhance fluency through weekly journal assignments.

Engage in pronunciation activities and effectively use newly learned vocabulary in speaking and writing.
Practice critical thinking of basic concepts and note important ideas.
Apply the process approach to writing paragraphs, integrating proper mechanics and formatting around a topic sentence with a controlling idea and a simple conclusion, while also improving fluency through weekly journal assignments.
