Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)

UNI’s Recordkeeping and Reporting Requirements

The following is a list of the records we must keep and make available to the Department of Homeland Security:

  1. Name
  2. Date and place of birth
  3. Country of citizenship
  4. Current address where the student currently resides
  5. E-Mail address
  6. Phone number
  7. The student’s current academic status
  8. Date of commencement of studies
  9. Degree program and field of study
  10. Whether the student has been certified for Practical Training, and the beginning and end dates of certification
  11. Termination date and reason, if known
  12. Copies of the written application to UNI, proof of financial responsibility, and academic records used for admission to UNI
  13. The number of credits completed each semester
  14. A copy of the student’s I-20 or DS-2019

UNI must report the following “events” to SEVIS within the specified time frames

Within 21 days:

  • Any student who has failed to maintain status or complete his or her program
  • A change of the student or dependent’s legal name or U.S. address
  • Any student who has graduated early or prior to the program end date listed on the I-20 form or DS-2019 form.
  • Any disciplinary action taken by the school against the student as a result of the student being convicted of a crime
  • Any other notification request made by SEVIS with respect to the current status of the student

Each term or session and no later than 30 days after the deadline for registering for classes:

  • Whether the student has enrolled at the school, dropped below a full course of study without prior authorization by a UNI DSO, or failed to enroll
  • The current address of each enrolled student
  • The start date of the student’s next semester

How UNI is Managing SEVIS Reportable Information

Since there are hundreds of students and exchange visitors at UNI who are recorded in SEVIS, the University has taken steps to automate this process. The University has chosen to use a specialized software package that will help UNI communicate with SEVIS. This software is called International Student & Scholar Management (ISSM) by Ellucian and is being used by many universities across the U.S.  Information from the Registrar’s office will be downloaded into this software, and then the Immigration & Advising Coordinator will send regular batches of updated information to SEVIS. This enhances the University’s ability to make sure that all of our students stay in compliance with Federal Regulations. The University has taken every possible step to keep this data secure and accessible only to those who have permission to read or manipulate it.

Communicating with You

The software that UNI uses to communicate with SEVIS will also help us to communicate with you.  Since it is more important than ever for us to maintain a reliable line of communication with you, We require that all students check their official UNI e-mail accounts for communication regarding SEVIS and their respective immigration statuses. All registered students have an e-mail address.

You must check this address frequently for updates and important messages concerning your immigration status.
