International Global Panther Success (GPS) Team

The International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the 2019-2020 Global Panther Success (GPS) Program. The GPS Team has 5 openings and students can apply for one or both semesters.​

Application Deadline: March 31, 2019 -- All positions for the Academic Year 2019-2020 have been filled.
 
Students who are selected to serve on the GPS Team work closely with the ISSO Director to welcome international students to UNI, help them navigate academic and student life at UNI, and, ultimately, enable them to make a smooth transition to American culture.
 

GPS Responsibilities

  • Communicate with admitted international students prior to arrival during the summer and winter break
  • Be available to start August 12, 2019 for the fall semester and January 6, 2020 for the spring semester
  • Attend all pre-orientation training sessions
  • Coordinate or assist with all orientation sessions for international students and events (i.e. social events, meals, info sessions, etc.)
  • Introduce new international students to UNI, interact with them weekly, assist them with questions that they might have, provide appropriate information, and direct them to appropriate UNI services as needed
  • Work as part of a committee to plan, organize, and implement events and activities sponsored by ISSO
  • Hold office hours at least one hour per week at ISSO   
  • Attend weekly GPS Team meeting
  • Other tasks as assigned
 

Selected GPS students receive a scholarship for their service. This position provides GPS students the opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills in a cross-cultural setting.  As a representative of ISSO and UNI, GPS students must employ cultural sensitivity when working with international students and always act professionally.

 

GPS Scholarship

ISSO award up to eight (8) competitive GPS scholarships to current students for the upcoming academic year for $625 for the semester or $1,250 for the academic year. Scholarship disbursement is based on performance and involvement, participation in International Student Orientation, and semester programs. ISSO maintains the right to cancel a scholarship if the GPS student does not meet expectations in all areas of scholarship qualifications, requirements, responsibilities, and timeline commitments.

Scholarships are generally applied towards the recipient's U-Bill. The GPS Scholarship is renewable but students generally need to re-apply each year, depending on the available funds. If the scholarship conditions are not met, the recipient will forfeit the scholarship and the remaining amount may be granted to a new recipient. Both domestic and international students are encouraged to apply. A minimum of 50% of the available scholarships is awarded to international students. Scholarship funds are limited and may vary from year to year.
 
Eligibility
Students must be a current UNI student who has completed a minimum of one (1) fall or spring semester at UNI. The student must:
  • Be enrolled in a full-time course of study at UNI
  • Have a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point average (GPA)
  • Be available to meet the timeline conditions of the scholarship (through May 2020), including the dates listed below (See GPS Timeline & Dates)
